KUKA success story: Mechanical Design Engineer, Luke Hipkiss
After deciding that sixth form wasn’t for me, I enrolled at Dudley College for a national diploma apprenticeship in mechanical engineering. I started at KUKA when it was Thompson Friction Welding, around seven years ago, as part of my five-year apprenticeship.
I finished my mechanical engineering degree with a First two years ago, and since then I have been involved in the design of the world’s largest direct drive friction welder. Seven years ago, I would never have thought I could achieve so much, and I couldn’t have done it without the support of senior management.
There isn’t a rigid hierarchy at KUKA – the more experienced managers have always passed down their knowledge, my role involves technical aspects like engineering, design, drawings, and using cad-cam software.
KUKA regularly offers training courses, and encourages you to progress into the role that you want, not the one that they need. There is plenty of support right from the beginning, and this is what has enabled my career to develop so quickly.
